Rev. Gillian Morton MA, BD, PCE. was born in Worcestershire - hence
her lifelong passion for cricket - Gillian attended a Methodist school
in Devon; an experience which was to shape her theological outlook. After
studying at St Andrews University and the free University, Berlin and
marriage to Alasdair she and Alasdair spent a term at St Colm's College,
Edinburgh, for missionary training before proceeding to Northern Rhodesia,
now Zambia. It is there, working in the United Church of Zambia in the
rural north, that Gillian really began to appreciate the value of the
written word. People would walk for miles to buy a new Testament or a
booklet of Scripture verses and treasure them long after they have fallen
apart through constant use. Alasdair and Gillian remained in Zambia from
1960 - 72 latterly involved in teacher training, Alasdair being Principal
of the David Livingstone Teachers College in Livingstone.
Back in Scotland and with four children, Gillian became involved in the
Play group movement and Play in Hospital, which combined with hospital
visiting with the friends Dumfries Royal Infirmary, led her via New
College, Edinburgh to full-time hospital chaplaincy. Initially at the
Western General and Northern group of hospitals in Edinburgh and then the
Borders General Hospital, Melrose. It was while she was Chaplain at the
Borders General Hospital that she began using the Amos Scripture Care
cards with patients, staff and visitors to the hospital. She became a
Trustee in 2004.
Dr. Josephine Munthali is a Malawian currently living in Edinburgh and
working for the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) in Glasgow
as an Africa Project Officer for East Africa and the Horn. She completed
her PhD in Education at Edinburgh University in 2001. The thesis was on
Education for All: Problems and Possibilities for Girls’ Schooling in
Malawi. The Centre of African Studies and the Department of Education
and Society supervised this research jointly. The study identified and
explored the obstacles to the development and implementation of Education
for All in contemporary Malawian context, with particular reference to
the primary education system.
The thesis also assessed the efficacy of the aid policies of the World
Bank and other international donor agencies and non-governmental organisations
in confronting the reality of the challenges facing basic education in
post-colonial Africa and Malawi in particular. In 1995 I completed my
MSc in African Studies. My dissertation research project assessed "The
Usage of Visual Communication and Typography in Reading and Teaching Materials
of the National Adult Literacy Programme in Malawi".
Dr. Josephine Munthali set up a charitable organisation, the Child Support
Project which is a registered Non Governmental Organisation in Malawi.
The project was established as a direct result of the PhD findings. The
project addresses issue pertaining to HIV/AIDS, poverty, food security
and education.
Dr. Josephine Munthali has currently been nominated as a member of the Commission of International Development and Peace for Caritas Europa. This will give a chance for Dr. Munthali to utilise her expertise in contribution to policy direction on issues affecting development programmes and peace and reconciliation procedures.
Dr. Munthali serves as a Chairperson for the Board of Trustees for the Child Support Project and also a Trustee Member for the Calvary Family Church which is a Malawian church based in Nottingham.
