Clutching is sometimes good and sometimes
bad. A child clutching on to the hand of his mother or a
baby clutching on to her favourite toy are happy images.
A homeless man clutching onto his bottle is not so
happy. Someone who attends the AA group in our church
recently said that ‘clutching at straws’ is like
looking for something but never finding it. This reminds
me of what our Lord said through the prophet Amos. ‘
They will look everywhere for a message from the Lord
and not find it.’ Amos 8:12.
We are committed to helping people
find the word of God through the outreach of our cards
and the Annual Report contains some of the comments we
have received from those who are using our cards. Major
Beryl Armistead of the Salvation Army shared with us
this story.
Clutching on to the
Word of God
‘I sent a card in a letter to a lady
of 87 in hospital, in Edinburgh, who had fallen
downstairs. Doctors strongly advised her to apply for a
flat or bungalow. She was neither senile nor simple, but
had Parkinson’s Disease, which had caused several
falls.
When I visited her in hospital, a week
later without warning, I found her clutching the card,
which was telling her to give all her cares to the Lord
for He cared for her. She told me that she had held it
for most of the week, and had been able to witness to a
Doctor and Nurses who had seen it. Although it was hard,
she had made the decision to move, and now lives in a
brand new bungalow, and says she’s so grateful for my
concern and God’s provision. ‘
