This is a short story about my life as a member of the Amos Scripture Care Trust. My name is Edwin Geirnaert. I am 48 years old. I was the only boy of a family of six. I did not have a very good childhood as I was always getting into trouble at school. I went to two schools, one was at Little France, the other, Duncan Street, is not far from where I live now. It was a school for backward people. To cut a long story short I was always getting into trouble with the police because of my stealing and shoplifting. At the age of 13 my dad died of a heart attack and my mother and 5 sisters decided to move down to Carlisle, because they never liked living in Edinburgh. We had relatives living in Carlisle. I did not want to go, but I had to, being only 13 years of age.
We were members of the Mormon Church. I lost interest in the Mormon Church when we moved to Carlisle. Things got worse for me and I ended up in a children’s home. Then I was admitted to a mental hospital. At the age of 21 I was sent to Rampton State Hospital. My mother died while I was in there but I couldn’t go to the funeral as I hadn’t been there long enough. After 14 years I was transferred back to the local hospital. I was released from hospital in 1991 by a decision of the Mental Health Review Tribunal. But I got into trouble again, and ended up in prison.

When I was released I went to live at Longcroft House, which is a home for ex-offenders provided by the Langley House Christian Trust. I left after a year to go and live in Livingston, in a YWCA Hostel. I didn’t like it very much so I went back to Longroft and it was then I started going to Church. I left again because things were changing and came back up to Edinburgh and started going to St George’s West Church which I am now member of.

I was asked if I would like to join the Amos Scripture Care Trust. The Trust does a
wonderful job carrying our God’s work and it has brought me closer to God.

I enjoy working with Amos Scripture Care Trust doing the Lord’s work reaching out to others and working with others and I will continue to do so because this work is vital to all who seek the Kingdom of God.
