For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

This excerpt from the Nicene Creed, formulated during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine, reminds us that there are times when God gathers His Church together to strengthen it and clarify its beliefs following periods of persecution and error.

The faithfulness of God pours out hope to the world. From the old to the new, from suffering to resurrection His love is unchanging. Are we confident enough in our world today to respond to Him with courage, integrity and vision?

Today, in Scotland our Church is struggling to maintain its members and to preserve its buildings. Elsewhere in Africa, the Middle East and Asia the Church is struggling to hold onto truth amidst persecution and error. It is hard for us as individuals to stand alongside our fellow Christians in countries where they are facing persecution. However, if each Church in Scotland formed a link with one persecuted Church and supported it through prayer and practical help, our compassion will increase and the Church will be strengthened.
