Excerpts from 'When
God Speaks' by Elinor Jones
Not what I
expected
Lord, you're not what I expected: I
thought that you would have been angry with me and that you would have judged me. I
thought you would have remembered the times when I spoke unkindly; when I could have
helped but didn't; when I deliberately set out to hurt others; when I put myself first. I
didn't think you would overlook MY sarcasm, my envy, my pride - all the things I so dislike in
myself. Most of all I didn't think you would forgive me for the time when I ... well
Father, you know the time I mean ...
I've heard it said that you are the God of
surprises and now I know this for myself. No one has ever accepted me just as I am and I
want to say thank you in Jesus' name.
My child, I would have sat in
judgment had you continued to reject me, but you chose to confess your sins and of course I am able
to forgive them. When you were determined to go your own way it caused you a lot of pain
and so I am glad that you have turned back to me.
Because I am a God of love I am also a
God of justice. The murderer and the thief will indeed stand before me. but so too will
the jealous person and the one who gossips, in fact all those who do not ask for my help
to turn from their selfish ways. They will all be judged, of that there is no doubt but it
is also written,---The Lord is gracious and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great
mercy- (Psalm 145:8). Always remember my greatest promise,---I so loved the world that I
gave my only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have
everlasting life- (John 3:16).
I have not overlooked your sin - I
have forgiven it!
I am here to rescue your soul and to set your
feet on a firm foundation for it is written, "If we confess our sins he is faithful
and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
You have been saved from my anger and now I am here to help you as you travel the
difficult path of life. Continue to trust me as I lead you on towards my Heavenly Kingdom
where justice, mercy, and love prevail.
